Project description

The research project funded by the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS - Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz) is intended to develop measurement and computational methods for assessing the exposure of individuals to commercial terahertz field sources, which are increasingly being used in medical and safety technology. Based on measurement results for the characteristics of practice-relevant immission situations (e.g., power density, directivity, polarization, and beam profile), body-internal exposure profiles for electric field strengths, absorbed powers, and temperature variations are generated with the aid of numerical calculation methods in the frequency range from 100 GHz to 10 THz. These profiles are intended to serve as a basis for proposals os still missing personal protection limits for electromagnetic fields in the terahertz frequency range. In addition, high-resolution simulation models of the skin and other critical organs, such as the eye, are being developed for this frequency range.
