Designing, Modeling and Testing of Novel Automotive Radar- and/or Antenna Systems for 77GHz Considering Manufacturing Tolerances

The development of innovative antenna systems along with the understanding in millimeter-wave propagation plays a significant role in the development of future automotive radar systems. Therefore, we are searching for talented students who bring in new ideas for prototyping and testing of the new radar- and antenna systems starting from November 1st, 2025.

Are you (almost) finished with your Master's degree or are you a talented engineer working in RF- and Antenna domain and want to pursue a PhD? Do you want to bridge the gap between academics and industry and apply your scientific expertise to real challenges in the area of automated and autonomous driving?

Your tasks

  • In general: Conduct research in topics related to 77GHz antenna system designs for future radar system prototypes, consisting of e.g. 3D- Antenna modeling, Radar module investigation including housing and radome, visualization of the results, generation of performance statistics considering production tolerances for mass production or
  • investigating new radar system concepts considering all system parameters and wave propagation effects and establishing the proof of concept with new automotive radar systems in vehicle on the street.

Your profile

  • You have a master’s or equivalent degree in Microwave Engineering (Preferable with Master Thesis on mmW Antennas) or Electrical Engineering, Communication Engineering, Computational Physics with excellent grades.
  • You have a profound understanding of Theoretical Electrical Engineering, High Frequency Engineering and Physics of wave propagation concepts.
  • You have interest in antenna modeling, MIMO Systems, Radar System, Radar Polarimetry, target angle estimation techniques etc.
  • You have a very good knowledge in at least one of the following EM simulation tools: CST MWS, HFSS, FEKO, EMPIRE.
  • You are able to program self-reliant in C, C++, MATLAB
  • You have a very good English skills, German skills would be a plus.
  • You are looking for a challenging task and like to be part of a team.

We offer

  • Funding for a 3-year full-time PhD scholarship in cooperation with University of Wuppertal.
  • The opportunity to work in a highly research-oriented environment that works on state-of-the-art tools within the ADAS/AD domain.
  • Being part of a strong, supportive global team of highly educated Radar engineers.
  • Hands-on work with real-world sensor data to develop and test your algorithms.
  • Flexible and family-friendly working hours.

Are you interested in the position? Awesome! We are looking forward to receiving your application containing your CV, a motivation letter, certifications and a current grade overview of courses taken in your Master’s degree. Please submit your application as a single PDF file by e-mail to Prof. Dr. Markus Clemens at clemens[at]uni-wuppertal.de.
